Welcome back, growers, to The Keep Growing Podcast! I’m your host, John Morgan, and we’re diving into Week 19, covering May 3rd to 9th. Spring is in full swing, and there’s plenty to do in the garden this week. So, grab your trowel, and let’s get to it!
[Transition]
First up, mark your calendars for Sunday, May 4th. We’ve got the First Quarter Moon, which means it’s prime time to plant or harvest aboveground crops. The moon’s energy is pulling those plants upward, so let’s make the most of it!
Now, let’s talk seeds. This week, you’ll want to get those Broccoli, Snap Beans, Head Lettuce, Leaf Lettuce, Winter Squash, Summer Squash, Cucumbers, Late Celery, Sweet Corn, Cilantro, Bok Choy, and Thyme in the ground. That’s a hefty list, so plan your beds and get sowing!
If you’re working with transplants, it’s go-time for Tomatoes. Those beauties are ready to settle into their new homes, so make sure your soil is prepped and your stakes or cages are ready.
[Short Pause]
Beyond planting, let’s talk lawn care. This is a great week to apply broadleaf weed control to keep your grass looking sharp. Hit those dandelions and clover before they take over!
And for our local listeners in Gallipolis, don’t miss the Gallipolis in Bloom Planting Day happening today, May 3rd, at 10 a.m. in the park. It’s a fantastic community event to beautify our town, so bring your gloves and join the fun!
[Weather Sounds]
However, that brings me to the weather. You might want to pack an umbrella and a jacket as we’re looking at cooler and stormy weather today and Sunday. Then as we move into next week, we’ll dry out and warm up to some more seasonable weather.
Alright, growers, that’s your game plan for Week 19. To recap: plant those aboveground crops under the First Quarter Moon, sow a variety of seeds, transplant those tomatoes, tackle lawn weeds, and, if you’re local, swing by the park for Planting Day.
Coming up next week, we’ll be having our annual Mother’s Day weekend sale at all of our store locations. Keep an eye on our website at bobsmarket.com for more information … and also sign up for a chance to win a garden journal.
As always, keep learning, keep digging, and, of course, keep growing!
