2. Clean Gutters
Make sure your gutters are clean before winter. A clogged downspout can exacerbate ice problems in the winter.
3. Varmint Proof Your Attic
Check vents to make sure no unwelcome guests get in for the holidays. Insulation in attics make warm, cozy nesting material, and if you think Cousin Eddie is annoying, a flock of pigeons (or other critters) can be worse … maybe.
4. Close Crawl Space Vents
Before the weather gets too cold, close crawl space vents for winter, and check to make sure that downspouts are draining adequately away from your house.
5. Trim Trees
Now that the leaves are off of the trees, check for broken or loose limbs and branches that could pose a safety risk during windy winter storms.
6. Cut Brush
If you live in a rural area, warm fall days are great for cutting brush and clearing fence lines. Plus, there nothing better than sleigh riding and a toasty bonfire later in the winter.
If you don’t have freeze-proof spigots, be sure to drain sill cocks so they don’t freeze and cause leaks.
9. Inspect and Clean Fireplaces
Before you fire up the fireplace this season be sure to have it professionally cleaned and inspected. Many homeowners neglect this very important task.
10. Check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
When the time changes in the fall and spring, it is a good idea to check your batteries.
